Default water leak!! but where?

hey guys ,i have a 94 k plate jap wrx impreza and was wondering if anyone has had a similar prob or any idea ,i am suffering from major water loss.the other day i did a long fast motorway run for an hour or so when i pulled up, after about 20 secs of idle on the spot i noticed temp gauge raising, turned off the car and steam started coming from the turbo area amungst all the water and vacume hoses.filled up the water tank and the car runs fine for a day or so then temp gauge start to rise.i turn off the car and let the engine temp settle and it takes an easy 2L of water then runs fine for another day.oil is clean no muck in it.checked all hoses vigerously no leaks.when coolant cap is off when filling it up ,whilst runnin i rev it up and water level drops.no water presant coming from over flow.the only thing i can notice is in said area on the top of the block where the top hose joins the alloy pipe under all the vacume and resovior pipes are is a stain and after vigerous revving and running for half hour or so on the spot i notice a slight trickle of water wether its worse under boost i dont no but not too sure what this is its got long bolts through it ,im hoping its not head gasket tbh, thought it was water pump there but looking at the pics of the pump im not so sure, any ideas would be very grateful

I would say you have answered your own question mate. It will be worse under load as the pipe will be softer so expand slightly opening up the split. The pipe will be perished slightly i imagine.

i have a leak too but i know where mine is just where the header tank pipe goes into the engine on top of cylinder 3 think its one of the heater pipes that runs along under the manifold its strange on mine though as it only leaks when sitting overnight not when driving and my temp gauge never goes above halfway, i only have to top up about half a cup of coolant a week gonna get it fixed before it gives way completely as it can only get worse the more times its used.

i had a similar problem, but i realized it was my bottom water pipe. when the car was cold it was fine, but when the water temp started to rise the rubber pipe expanded and started to let out water slightly. u could also try looking for the orange staines from all the crap that builds up in the rad....sorry if am not really any help but i thought id share anyway =)

found the misterious leak at last ,it was the small pipe that goes from the header tank to the turbo hard pipe .where it was attatched to the turbo it had one of them gash sping clip thingys holding it on but when you moved the pipe after a good hard drive water started spurting out so emagine what it was like under ful boost.jubblee cliped now and seems to have cured the water loss so far but time will tell ,cheers for your ideas peeps

ok thought id solved the problem. now has reared its head up again.major water loss ie 2l a day .no visable leaks when run up on the spot and does not over heat.sometimes it runs fine for a while then ocasionally starts to overheat and the heaters in the car go cold and the bottom hose is stone cold, this indicates a air lock to me,then leave for 15 mins then runs fine again!.no water is coming through the overflow at all. ive checked all the other hoses to no avail. its really getting on my **** now carrying water every where i go .im forever filling the ******* up which i think the air lock is comin from but cant find a leak for the f@$in life of me.ive only recently bought this scoob and smells like rad weld in the water looks like previous owner has tried to cover up a dodgy rad as it looks like its split before and re sealed itself as a dirty great spray mark from top left corner apeared a few weeks ago .ive cleaned it all up and its never come back.if the rad is shagged ie all blocked up by ****e would this have anything to do with it

The pipe that was leaking at the turbo. Take it off and have a good look at it. It almost certainly has a small split in it and the wider jubilee clip is just masking it so you cant see any leaks when you move the pipe about. Under presuure its probably leaking

i had a leak on my astra td (same principle!), it would take about half an hour to get the leak started and it was a jubilee clip that had rust on it so it felt like it was as tight as it could go. new clip, job done

I would change the rad if i was you, the rad has had a previous repair/bodge job done on it by your post above. Get a new hoses top and bottom and where it leaked before so you know it's all good then. New rad is about £80 i think.

I had a similar problem with my Type R and it turned out to be the water pipe on the turbo rubbing on the gearbox housing causing a very small hole. The water leaked from the hardpipe onto the headers which evaporated it almost instantly which is why i could never find water on the ground.Might be worth an investigation

Hi mate,

I had the same problem on a 94 last week mine turned out to be the small pipe from a nipple under the engine to the oil cooler on the oil filter, only leaked after a bit of boost. i was made up when i found it ,two weeks of every night with head and poking fingers in hot engine. Good luck.
