Default Impreza has cut out and wont start, please help

Hi i was driving along last night when all of a sudden the doors unlocked themselves then re-locked, i didn't think much of this at the time as i thought i'd the lock with my arm or something.

Anyway so a carried on and about 20 mins later the same happened again but this time the car kind of stalled as i was driving along. The ignition lights all came up and i still have power.

I pulled into a laybay to try and get her going again but had no luck.

I'm inclined to believe its an alarm/immobiliser fault but was wondering if any of you guys have had a similar problem and if so what it turned out to be.

The funny thing about it is my dash and all electrics work still, but my defi's,avcr and edfc don't. Stereo still works lights etc car still locks and unlocks. She will turn over on the starter but just will not catch. It sounds like the fuel pump is not pumping. The alarm still locks and unlocks the car.

Anyway its an MY99 Impreza turbo uk and it has the factory Sigma alarm is that helps.

Any info greatly appreciated

Cheers

Biggs

Edit for search function

Problem turned out to be the number 11 fuse behind the coin tray.

I know the Sigma immobilisers had an issue getting interference from things like mobile transmitters but never heard of it happening while driving.

does sound like your immobiliser has kicked in, have you checked the fuses for the fuel pump?

I have checked all the fuses under the bonnet and behind the coin tray, they all seem fine.

Its not interference as i have also tried disarming it using the keypad

This is a long shot but the only other thing i can think of is fuel pump relay.

Could anybody tell me where that is on a MY99 please ??

Stig i was going to say the same thing

Biggs according to the autodata CD the fuel pump relay is located near the drivers right hand side knee, under the cover. Please note the autodata didn't list any relays for the 99 so but did for the 1996, so i'm assuming they're in the same place on both. (applies to RHD cars)

Turned out to be the number 11 fuse behind the coin tray. The connector behind it had come loose.

Questions for you to answer to help us to help you:

1. When you put the key in and turn the ignition on, do you
a) hear the fuel pump prime
b) See the Check Engine light on constantly, flashing, or not at all?

2. If you don't hear the fuel pump prime, if you listen carefully, do you hear the relay click on and off underneath the dashboard?

3. When you try and start it, do you see the check engine or immobiliser (key symbol) lights on the dash flashing?

4. As per Bigg's experience, have you checked the fuses in the internal box behind the coin tray, and in the engine compartment?

5. Has the car been recalcitrant to start, or otherwise mucked about over the last few days?

Fill us in on the above and we'll hopefully be able to help you narrow down the list of possible explanations.

as splitpin says check for the pump prime noise!

im having a prob with mine at the mo and it turns out i have a tempermental relay because when it does not start a bang on the dash gets it going lol.i also had a problem months ago when the indicators kept packing up.this too was iffy wires in the back of the relay box.
seems quality control wasnt a strong point when it came to the wiring !!!

What's the technique to remove the little coin tray to get to the fuses, on a MY99/00?

splitpin cant hear fuel pump kick in the relay clicks twice and the key light and the check engine light go off have checked all fuses and wires to the back of the fuses behind the coin tray and engine compartment they all fine and the car has been running fine with no problems until other day have also read on here about the sigma alarm and immobiliser that might be the cause of it to remove coin tray pull it up a bit and towards you
