Default ecu identification

when i bought my 99 uk turbo i was told it was fitted with a sti ecu but after further inspection i have found that it is fitted with a E3 ecu which i thought was a standard uk type ecu??
does anyone know what models E3 ecu's were fitted to?
if it is the standard uk ecu is it mappable?
