Had the same problem with mine recently.
I am pretty sure it was being caused by a split in the intake pipe that connects to the turbo.
The car is currently sat in the garage waiting to have it replaced.
I tried to do it myself, as you would expect it to be an easy job....
Well, 6.5 hrs later, after lifting the manifold to get it in I realised that the silicone pipe supplied to me is a really bad fit. It needs chopping and cutting all over the palce to get it in. The time I spent on it has done my back in!
So if you find a split on the inlet pipe, don't buy a cheap silicone pipe from Ebay, and don't expect it to be an easy job to replace!

my brother had that on his 98 turbo, turned out to be the speed sensor. New one was 100 and odd quid from subaru but his would also cut the boost if you put your foot down properly (cos it can't sense the speed therefore thinks its stopped and the MAF throws up errors - apparenty) Also the speedo didn't work either. But as a temporary fix he took the sensor out and cleaned it with brake cleaner and it ran ok again for a bit. This would show you if it was a giving a fault.
