Default Shocks absorbers

How do you test or know the oil filled kyb shocks are ok ?

I've got my spare set stripped down to its basic parts. With the shock in my hand, I can push the piston rod down with a little bit of resistance.
It will stay in full down position until I pull it back up, but it has a hell of lot resistance where you have to give it a fair amount of pulling.
If you continue to pump the shock the resistance increase on the down stroke.

Im so used to gas filled shocks where everything bounces back, so not sure about oil filled ones. Also anyone know the prices for original top mounts, the rears look a bit tired.

cheers Phil.
