Default V3 / V4 STI head question

I have a few sets of heads that I have been collecting in the garage now, and am wondering if I am correct is saying the following
V3 STi heads have small shims between the valve stem and the underside of the bucket.
V4 STi heads have a large shim inside the bucket and the cam lobe forces down on it.
A set of heads with hydraulic buckets is just a set of WRX heads.

Please correct me if I'm wrong as I want to make sure I have the correct items.

Cheers
Craig

I forgot to mention on the valve part:

IH = STI inlet valve
EH = STI exhaust valve

i believe the WRX valves are stamped EDH and IDH ( i could be wrong)

The cams for v3/4 should be

L4IN
L4EX
R4IN
R4EX

Please note the above cams should have 2 cast mark lines going through them as can be seen in the picture above.

WRX buckets have shims on top as shown in my last picture - you can see the edges of the bucket and the shim in between.

V3/4 Heads are the same to look at, there is a slight variation in the cam lobes only and even this is hardly noticeable if measured.

Glad i could help, when buying these heads be careful as people do tend to swap bits around. i.e. cams are never sti and buckets are, or buckets are and cams are not. Hope you get the drift.

When buying the future heads, just post the pics up mate. I actually have a collection of them in my workshop which i bought some time ago. SO could always take more pics if need be.

Please note the WRX and STI heads castings are exactly the same.

Good Luck with the refund mate.

Got a full refund from Subbaruu at the weekend, so all settled now, and have managed to source another set of proper V3 STi heads. Got to say, Subbaruu was very honest to deal with and didn't hesitate in giving me my money back - so big to him - nice to find that there are still decent people in this world.

STI Baly, thanks for the help, I had 3 different sets of heads open at one time, and as much as I was pretty sure I knew what I was looking at, doubt was creeping in to my mind, so to have someone set you straight is always good- yet another top bloke on here.

Cheers

I have chatted to Baly about these heads over the years and we can not find any definative difference between V3 or V4.

(Edited to say there are hints at the bottom of page 3 in the thread link in my post below as to the probable subtle differences between the V3 and V4 cams)

A bit more info for you

V3 casings markings -
Passenger side - top 07 japan - bottom LH B tk 07
Drivers side - top 04 japan - bottom RH B tk 04

V4 casings markings -
Passenger side - top 02 japan - bottom LH B tk 02
Drivers side - top 01 japan - bottom RH B tk 01

The markings on the v3 cams -

Drivers side:
Inlet LB R4IN and 2 R4IN
Exhaust LB R4EX and 4 R4EX

Passenger side:
Inlet KG L4IN and 4 L4IN
Exhaust M4 L4EX and 3 L4EX

Markings on the v4 cams -

Drivers side:
Inlet GE R4IN and 2 R4IN
Exhaust G2 R4EX and 14 R4EX

Passenger side:
Inlet FH L4IN and 2 L4IN
Exhaust GF L4EX and 4 L4EX

The cams usually have lines through the numbering. However not always but virtually always!

I cant remember.
To be honest it is a long long time since I have looked at any. That is info from my notes along time ago.

Your best bet for identification is

The cams should definately have L4IN L4EX R4IN R4EX on them
The valves also have IH and EH on them
The shims are underbucket

Perhaps some one still has some pics of some about.
My V4 heads are coming off my engine soon
So I might get some pics up of those - and amend my post accordingly if need be.
If you want me to I can call Baly and ask him.
