Forged pistons - excessively noisy?
Just after an opinion from anyone who has had forged pistons fitted to their car:
With a bore clearance of about 2.5 - 2.8 thou, should I expect a 2.0 STI engine to sound, when cold:
a) barely any different to a standard one
b) a bit rattly, but unlikely to wake the neighbours or frighten off potential buyers when the car eventually comes up for sale, or
c) like a tractor with a sump full of marbles?

Also: what's the consensus on strengthened con rods - a good idea even on a car likely to remain standard or mildly tuned, or not worth paying for?

2.5 - 2.8 I would expect Piston Slap.... Are you planning on running NOS? If not then i would not go more than 2 Thou. Even at 2 Thou you will get piston slap when cold.
I would say even at 2.8 Thou it would not wake the neighbours.
Personally I would NOT do an engine build for myself without fitting uprated Rods... even if it was to remain mainly Standard.

Depending on your clearances again the oil consumption should not be much of a problem.
Just remember when it comes to selliing this motor a lot of people will not be able to work out why you didn't uprate the rods (i.e doing the pistons and rods is a good selling point) Make sure you take pictures of all the work done to the engine though, or ask your builder to do for you as a lot of people lie.
Good Luck

2.5thou is pretty damn quiet, oil consumption depends a lot on the type of pistons, we have had good success with Mahle pistons being very good for low oil consumption.
