Default running problems

hi, i got a 93 wrx import.standard apart from an early sti ecu and forge dump valve..
i recently fitted a decat pipe and since then it hasnt run properly..been stuttering at low revs and feels like its gunna stall at low revs.when fitting the pipe i had to remove what looked like a temp sensor from the down pipe ...would this effect it? what dod the sensor do?

thanks,matt

What early STI ecu are you running (6K perhaps?)

Sensor is the 'Cat on fire' (brings up a warning light on your dash square box with wavy lines) which you don't have to worry about as your car doesn't have a cat any more but this shouldn't affect the running of the car, when i had mine done i reset the ecu.

any other ideas? also found a water leak from the header tank..any chance this could cause these symptoms in some kind of way?

if the header tank is leaking it shouldn't affect the running of the car but i would advise possible checking to see where the leak is (tank or cap).

Is the decat pipe properly sealing with the rest of the exhaust as i would say it's possibly an air leak somewhere.

the leak is from one of the smaller hoses coming off the tank

Forget about everything else... It could be just chance that you think it's related. I thought the same with my scoob but it was the MAF Sensor afterwards. It draws air intake better when at higher revs because the sensor is cleansed because of pressure but at low revs it struggles! worth trying could pick up a second hand one off someone trusty for around 30 -50GBP otherwise 250GBP brand new! hope this helps.......

Or Idler control valve might needs cleaning = Fuel related... If you take it to a garage they can give it a clean for around 15GBP thats what it might also be... Those are the cheap options anyway!

I had the same problem. Scooby clinic diagnosed it and fixed it very reasonably. I went to 3 other garages first and they all diagnosed Idle air valve and air mass meter. It turned out to be plugs (check gaps), new coil packs and the sensor in the gearbox. It didn't know what gear it was in! I'd start with plugs as coil packs are 70 odd quid.

Hope this helps. I'd consider somewhere like scooby clinic. I've tried lots of other places and wish I'd just been there first. They can diagnose even the early impreza's!

Yeah, I was told it might be gapping in the plugs aswell and/or possibly a coilpack breaking down.. It could be a number of things really, Just try the cheapest options first. hope you have some luck mate!

Whilst the car is idling unplug the MAF the car should stall (not a definitive test as testing the voltage is the best way)
Coil packs you will need to pull back the rubber to see if the ends are cracked ,do it carefully or you may crack them yourself.
Plugs check the condition and gap.
