That will be your problem then Carl, the hydraulic lifters should be free to pull out of the lifter bore's on the heads.
They should all be stripped and cleaned when removing the head,to remove the build up of old oil/sludge/tarnish - and it also allows the lifters to "pump up" correctly when the engine is first started up.

sounds like legacy heads ("rocker over valves") so they are even worse for being tappety. a set of 97-98 impreza heads with solid followers would be a sensible upgrade for the future.

thanks for that, i had thought the heads might have been off a legacy but i dont know why these heads are on the car, if i were to fit the 97-98 heads i would have to change the inlet manifolds? plus i have to make some changes to the wiring would i not.

When I rebuilt a 2.5 engine in my old MY96 scoob, it was very tappety, was recommended to use a good quality mineral oil rather than the semi synthetic I put in to run the engine in, once I dropped the oil and used mineral, the tappet noise went with in a few miles, done 500 careful miles then changed the oil for semi synthetic.
Maybe worth a try first as only cost around £20
