Default 95 import overheating.

hi just wondering if anyone has any ideas for me. my 95 import is overheating after using for a couple of minutes, iv changed temp sensor first because it didnt seem to be getting as hot as it was registering. that made no difference so i changed thermostat, however on removal of the housing i found that the thermostat had already been removed prior to me owning it. it will sit on tick over fine for long periods of time befor it begins to get over normal running temp. but when being driven will get hot very quickly however driven. any usual things that fail. hoping its not head gasket, its not loosing coolant, no coolant in oil or leaks around head. are water pumps a usual suspect?

cheers Dan

Water pumps are the least to suspect - they rarely fail.

All water pumps are the same pattern for all EJ engines... except that some are 2 ports, others are 3 ports (off the top of my head, don't know which MY engines use which type though).

It would've made sense to replace the pump when you did the stat...

the stat was easy option on my car i could get into it with out removing anything bar the housing for it. to get into my pump i take it i have to remove my rad and timing belt? may as well replace that at the same time. i think i can get my rad out with out removing my front mount. if water pump not a usual suspect, what direction would you point me in next?
