Nah, what you have circled in yellow is the radiator header tank mate. Fill the transmission fluid up through the dipstick hole you circled in red I used Castrol Syntrax to top mine up

On the passenger front suspension turret under the hood... metal VIN plate... 'Applied model'... 7-digit code... What is it?

Basically, you have a MY97 or 98 (do you have the later interior, with the temp/fuel gauge next to each other) WRX Wagon... But it has a few updates by a previous owner i.e. a v.5/6 front bumper and crystal headlights, and also a v.3/4 STi intercooler. Plus v.7 WRX alloys painted black.

Whatever, you still have 276bhp!

Nice motor by the way!

EDIT: Just looked more carefully and I think I can make out the central cubby on the top of the dash as found on MY98-00, so I'm certain you have a MY98 (Sep 97 - Aug 98) WRX Wagon. As I said, post up that code, then we'll tell you for sure...

If its low then i would suggest you get the car serviced as all the scoobs i have ever owned didnt use any transmission fluid between changes as this seems to have been "overlooked" by the looks....
Major service with all the belts is what i would personally do (all fluids etc, less than 600 quid).

Sorry mate, being a MY98 (I take it it's a manual?), then it's 250PS (247bhp), as the WRX Wagons never got up to 280PS (276bhp) - unlike their STi Version 3-6 counterparts did, from MY97-00.

Interestingly, and rather strangely, the other MY97/99/00 WRX Wagons had 'only' 240PS (237bhp) so, by chance, you've got yourself the one particular MY that has an extra 10bhp! lol.

If it's on the minimum mark (cold on a level surface) then I'd leave it, as tony says they shouldn't use any tranny oil between service intervals. If you're uncertain of the last time it was changed then drain it. Don't fill it anymore than halfway though, as it only saps power adding more..

Looks good BTW, keep it..

You must be careful with this dipstick ......
a couple of years ago I 'found' it and looked - the oil was hardly on the dipstick!!

In a panic I filled it up to the full mark ... at which point I realised that
I hadn't pushed the dipstick home fully!!

It was now way overful .... I had to drain some out!

Moral ... make sure it is pushed home hard (if you will excuse the word use! )

Cheers guys, it seems to be ok, no harm done, does it not have a blow off / blow out bit if you over fill it?

all fluids either topped up or replaced!

The Wagons will be the most desirable in the years to come ...
they will, generally, be the ones which haven't been messed about with -
giving the purest form of classic motoring known to man
