the impreza i bought has had an engine change and is down as a p reg 1997 but when advertised was said to have 260bhp which is thw 1996 wrx according to a book i have so is there a way of telling which engine ive got so i can buy the right induction kit...? thanks

IK is a waste of time/money unless you are running big BHP with a FMIC. Stick with the OE airbox and fit a KnN or Green panel filter. By fitting an IK you will only be drawing in warm under-bonnet air as opposed to nice cold dense air from the OE airbox
