92-96 cars have the ESL daughterboard.
97-98 cars need to have the ecu replaced by an aftermarket one (iirc)
99 onwards i think have Ecutek.
Then there are Solaris,Simtek,Motec etc.

All depends what you want from your ecu as most can come with anti lag, launch control etc and how much you want to spend.

mods will be tubular headers heat wrapped, heat wrapped decat down pipe and cat back exhaust, panel filter, looking for around the 280bhp mark, dont want to spend lots of money on an ecu, just want to make sure its running right and fuelling correctly with a nice gain in power.

z4 is from a late 94-96 wrx so will need the ESL daughterboard.

What car do you actually have?

you wouldn't be far off 280bhp with a sensible chip (you should already have a chip being the prodrive), the tubular headers are not needed at your level of tune, just stick with the decat downpipe (wrapped as you say) and a decent panel filter.

Cheapest non-mappale option for c.270-280bhp (with decat fitted) would be the ever popular Polar Performnce chip. You somtimes see them on here (already fitted in the doner ECU - ready to swap-over) for about £80.

Cheapest mappable option would be a 2nd hand A'PEXi Power FC (without Commander) for about £200-250, then mapped by JGM for £250 +VAT (when he's next in your area)...
