I have a 1997 WRX STi, ive just got my self a really nice carpc & XENARC MDT-X7000 headunit, and id like to add the OBD-II Bluetooth scanner but i have no idea if my car is obd or obd-ii or perhaps even neither!? can someone point me in the right direction of where to look please?

I think this year doesn't support obd at all.
You need ssm scanner.

Is there any sure fire way to tell!? where would this port be located? (where is the SSM port located) and can anyone recommend a good scanner & where to buy from?

Dont suppose there's any SSM to OBD-II type converters (sorry if thats a dumb question, im still new to this stuff!)

Nope, you need an SSM protocol dongle for your ODB port.


I use an ODBkey Bluetooth dongle (around £100 mark) that can be reconfigured from ODB to SSM Subaru protocol using a laptop. Streams to my android tablet just perfectly. You can also get these with USB or wifi output. Great bits of kit.


Can be used with Torque Pro or BTSSM apps, possibly others too.

Actually, I'm more the "do it yourself" type, so I just want to know if it is OBD-II (through K-Line, I think CAN is too recent), OBD-I (or B35, as people may refer to it also), or something else. I just want to plug myself to the car for now, takling with it through SSM will be the next step

Yes you're right. The easiest and cheapest way to get access to your data through the port will be to use a simple KKL cable which you can get for £5 plus a USB OTG adaptor plug into an Android device. I did this for ages and it worked great.

 

What program do you need on the Android device to view car info?

 

Either Torque Pro or BTSSM which is much better for logging and fault diagnosis.

Yep. It was Andrew Carr who pointed me towards BTSSM. It's a great app, much more professional that torque pro. BTSSM will allow you to data log all sensors and fields, save data and WOT power runs, log knock events etc. You can save the data to excel file to email and open on another version. Andrew was able to view my ECU data remotely to diagnose a problem using it. It'll also do dyno graphs, which I'd take with a pinch of salt.

 

Sounds like a really good bit of kit, I am right in saying it'll work with my V4 type R?

 

I'm not 100% sure on compatibility with your V4 as I only looked at this for my Foz STI which also runs quite an old ECU.

 

My98 v4 has an obd2 port,it's on the crossover when cars have to have the obd2.
Esl uses this port to communicate and I could get data (limited) with a kwp2000.
Not saying the ssm port won't work as I've not tried on a v4 car.

I have a late MY99. But have a Simtek 'Mk.2' ECU fitted. Are there any apps (or any PC S/W) that can communicate with Simtek via the MY99/00's OBD port?
