Default 1997 WRX 2.5 Mods - Help

Hi,

This is my first post on here, I've had my subaru for around a month.

It has a good spec but it's running pretty much standard bhp.

It's a 1997 (P) WRX Import

Here's the engine spec:

EJ257 short motor from Roger Clark Motorsport
STI forged crank and rods
Omega forged pistons
New sump
New water pump rcm
New rcm oil pump
1.6mm 3 layer cometic metal head gaskets
11mm ARP head bolts
All new idler pulleys
Import sti timing belt
SS set of headers (manifold and up pipe)
3" kakimoto from turbo back
440 sti injectors
V3 STI heads
Excedy organic clutch
Walbro fuel pump
Ngk pfr7b uprated plugs
Baileys dumpvalve
Standard ECU and standard VF22 turbo
Standard Airbox
Rebuilt Gearbox

I'm looking to Upgrade the turbo, Intercooler, ECU, Injectors and get the car setup. What's best to go for with my setup?

Is there anything else I should look at doing? WIll I have to do away with the Maf/Map sensor?

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks, Stephen

Question

All those things you mention need to be changed - plus decat downpipe - to make the most of your nice spec motor.

However, do you have a bhp/lb ft goal and/or budget? Answer this first, then we can advise appropriately...

Hi,

I'm looking for as much power as possible for my setup without making it to unreliable.

Not really fussed about budget but not going over the top with this one.

Thanks, Stephen

Question

Okay good.

Next question: what heads are you running? The std MY97 WRX ones, or New Age AVCS (variable valve timing type)?

I think you have covered everything that you need to change.

Depends what choice of ECU you go for as to whether you keep the MAF, APEXI you can keep the MAF, Simtek which is a bit more pricey but generally regarded as better and you can do away with the MAF.

Even though your gearbox is rebuilt it will still be the limiting factor if its standard. Will probably be at its limits at about 350ft/lbs. BHP wise you could see close to 400bhp.

Injectors: 550 should be enough

Turbo: Depends on your budget, I am going with an Andy Forrest 20g as its spose to work well on a 2.5.

Intercooler: Hybrid FMIC from Harvey.

Sorry for not replying mate - been busy. Yes, Dalek Leader lol has covered everything - I agree with his advice.

NOTE: If you want to go for 350bhp, then I'd get a TD05 18g or HS380 - will easily hit that figure and have low spool and relentless surge to the redline. Fit 550cc injectors, as mentioned.

If you want 400bhp, then you may just about get it with a TD05 20g, but an MD321H will defo go past it and, despite it being nearly double the price of the 20g, they are, allegedly, one heck of a turbo. I'd go for 650cc injectors (or 740cc) at this goal..

I would also agree that whilst you haven't got a mappable ECU yet, then get the MAFless Simtek - can just drive the car without the nagging "...But what if the MAF fails...?" thought in the back of your head, when you're hooning. Makes real good sense IMHO.

Got some serious expenditure ahead of you, though...

Thanks for the replys guys.

If I was to uprate my gearbox could I run 740cc injectors on the 20g and see more power or are the 550's enough?

Sorry I'm not to clued up on these things, who's harvey for the FMIC?

Thanks, Stephen

Harvey supplies Hybrid FMIC's. PM him for a price. Very helpful guy.

You could see more power if you had an uprated GB in terms of the torque. Its torque that kills gb's. BHP on a 20g would max at bout 400bhp I think.

You might be okay on 550cc on the 20g, but the injectors will be pretty much maxed out. Also, you can't necessarily guarantee making 400bhp on the 20g... if that bothers you, of course.

If you try for a definite 400 on either a 20g or MD321H, then best to fit 650cc (or 740's, if hard to get hold of).

Or you could fit 550's AND get an uprated FPR and turn the pressure up to c.3.5bar (std being 2.7bar with vac hose connected). The upped pressue means more fuel flowing through the injectors for the same amount of IDC...

TD05 Turbo from Andy Forrest
740cc Injectors - Anyone on here supply?
Hybrid FMIC from Harvey
Apexi ECU

I'm running standard ECU and Turbo for the running in period.

My engine is not fitted yet, got all the bits. Just waiting on a quote from ZEN for fitting. I will be running 550's which suits me anyway as dont want to destroy my gearbox.

Is your engine fitted? I didnt think you could run the standard ECU with a bigger engine?

Sounds good, yes my engine is fitted. It's still the same style heads and inlet from the old engine so no problem running the standard ECU. Obviously theres not much power but it's good for running it in.
