Default Has anyone used this setup?

As above...

Subaru Impreza V9 Crankshaft ACL Competition Bearings on eBay, also, Subaru, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 22-Apr-09 22:45:40 BST)

Doesnt seem a bad setup to make up a bullet proof standard engine??
Any input please.

Zen rebuilt my engine with ACL top-of-the-range 'Race Series' mains and bigs, so must be fine. Also I'd say that v.9 crank is gonna be good too.

However, no point in having a 'bullet proof' bottom lol, if you don't go for forged rods and pistons! Lots of options out there... depending on your wallet. Once again, a good 'budget' set of rods would be ones from a v.9 STi too (Zen fitted these in my motor too - as well as v.3/4 forged pistons). That said, there are much better items available e.g. from the likes of Wosner, Mahle, Crower, etc, etc. But, of course, the caveat is the higher cost...

I think the pistons in my "99 Type R are forged as standard (i think!!) dont think I'll be uprating the rods due to cost and the fact that I'm not gonna be running huge power- just slightly more than standard....i.e decat, blitz, walbro pump & remap.
I just want a good reliable bottom end that will last & take a bit of abuse.

what power are you running now
what power do you class as slightly more
how mny miles has engine done
has it been seviced well
imho you should consider pistons and rods to be on safe side, it will save you in the future and give you peace of mind

Cheers for the help folks.
It's a standard "99 Type R.
Well serviced.about 78k miles.
The engines standard except for Blitz system, decat downpipe, walbro pump, cosworth sump baffle and will be going for a remap to get her set up properly. Not sure what power that'll be running-maybe 310-320bhp roughly as boost will not be increased.
Surely standard rods & pistons would cope with that as it's usually big end bearings that give trouble?

unless your going to cgange pistons and rods i would consult your mapper to see what advice he gives
your all ready going to be taking the block out to get it machined to accept the v9 crank so pistons and rods are all ready coming out, spend a few more pound and go bullet proof, you dont want to be stripping the block in another 6 months.
give david (api) or paul (zen) a bell to get there advice too

hth

Hold on a minute....you say the block needs machined to take V9 crank? I wasn't aware of this. It suggest in the advert that its a straight swap to an EJ20 --
"THE CRANKSHAFT IS THE REAR THRUST/LARGE JOURNAL TYPE AND WILL FIT ALL EJ20 AND TURBOS THAT USE THIS TYPE OF THRUST AND BEARING SIZE, FOR EG--- STI WRX P1 RB - OF THE 2.0 16V VARIANTS"

Ahhh...I think I know where the confusion is...mines already rear thrust & you're changing from centre to rear. Hopefully won't need machining but I'll ring this guy anyway...Many thanks Jim.

It wasn't David I spoke to, he wasn't available. He reckoned for a fast road road car it should be ok as long as it's set up properly and there's no det occuring. But if boost was increased or I was doing track days he would def advise on rods & pistons.

I'd still defo double check and confirm with David or Paul (Subaru gurus and all that), before parting with your hard-earned - maybe ill-gotten(?) lol - gains...

**Edit by the webteam**

Andy, what would be the advantages of sticking in your forged rods and ARP bolts...just more strength I assume?

Cheers...

This just goes to show how little these internet / ebay sellers know about this stuff, dangerous territory.

Even though we are not as cheap, I can compete for a genuine like for like price. But you do get to talk to someone who has been building engines for over 40 years has a wealth of experience with Subaru engines in particular and will be here on the end of the phone when you need him [ during working hours ]

Try that with ebay sellers.

David thanks for info mate..I spoke to someone at your place over the phone earlier and they assured me that this crank would be ok as it's rear thrust.
I've already purchased though. How much could ya do the Eagle rods & APR bolts for?

On a different note, I had a look through your site and noticed you do baffled sumps for a pretty damn good price. I have just bought a brand spanking new sump, how much would you charge to have it baffled/exchanged? Pm me if ya like.

Cheers,
Ryan

Ryan, the forged rods will give you a stronger bottom end, they are lighter than the std rods also. At the end of the day it's all down to what you want to achieve/spend?
For the record, Advance Automotive are engine builders and have links to Roger Clark Motorsport. I shouldn't really be promoting then as they are rivals! However,
I deal alot with them for parts and they are freindly, helpfull and reliable.

I bought the Cosworth baffle plate off Advance Automotive, they def do seem to be pretty reputable & have some well priced products. No complaints here.

I'm tempted for the rods, especially at that price...but then where does it all end lol.
