Default Help, Is it serious???

My 04 WRX seems to have developed a strange noise. Its low miles (39K) and very well looked after, full history, warmed up and cooled down properly etc. Its mildly modded. Exhaust, filter and ecutek (290 ish bhp). Over the last couple of days there seems to be a tappety kind of noise which manifests itself about 3000 rpm. If you lift off it stops or if you accelerate more it eventually disappears or at least I can't hear it over the exhaust. Other than the noise it seems fine and I can't see anything loose, rattling or leaking under the bonnet. Any ideas???? Thanks.

if it goes when warm it could be a bit of piston slap. nothing to worry about. if it doesnt then check the oil level. what grade of oil is in it? when was it last changed? it might be a something loose like a heat shield or the cm belt tensioner. has it had a new tensioner in its life?

Oil level is fine and it was serviced at Keith Price Subaru only 3 weeks ago. Although I was surprised to see that they use magnatec (seen some poor reviews off that stuff on here). As far as I'm aware the cambelt tensioner has not been done. That is due at its 50K service. Is it worth getting it done early. If it is the tensioner and it fails am I going to **** my engine??
