Default RB320 RESONATOR REMOVAL

A mate of mine who has an RB320 is getting it mapped in 3 wks, putting bigger turbo on and adj pressure reg and fuel pump. leaving standard airbox on and i was wondering is it worth his while removing the resonator inside wing? will this have any performance, safety or sound benefit,
He putting a 400bhp turbo on but is aiming for 380bhp

Was contemplating the same mod so i did a search and iirc 'Harvey' did a post on this and it apperantly causes too much disturbance on the intake, and another point i found was water being drawn in if you happen to hit really bad weather, as i said iirc
Anyhow left mine on so it was obviously not benificial or it would of been off Hth.

I replaced mine with an elbow pipe from the US just before a remap. Didn't have time before the map to notice any immediate difference, though the map was quite successful: 289bhp on a 2.5WRX thru a 3" Milltek sports cat exhaust, Pipercross filter and ecutek remap. Don't know if the resonator replacement helped get the most out of the remap or whether it's just a relatively good example. It did increase intake noise slightly, in a good way.

Just taking the resonator out without replacing it leaves you open to the problems referred to in the previous post, but getting the replacement elbow pipe is a pain, and quite expensive if you end up paying postage and import duty. I have seen a mod though that involves taking out the resonator unit, sawing off the lower box part, and patching the resultant hole with some fiberglass sheet to leave, basically, an elbow pipe. That would take the resonator out of the equation, but would give you a controlled pathway for the air. Worth doing if you're taking the resonator out, but whether it's worth the hassle for a few horses is a different issue
