WHAT IS BEST 480-500BHP TURBO?
Thinking of changing my turbo and going for around 480bhp mark, currently have@ 410bhp on a tdo6 on a 2.5 block,
what is the best standard fitment turbo to deliver this power?

I don't think anyone will have the lack of intelligence to suggest what is THE best turbo, but I would certainly recommend an AET standard fit turbo as used on my car. I am not aware of any other set-up (which takes in to account my WHOLE engine) that delivers the driveability or sheer grunt that this turbo helps to provide. A previous RR showed 500bhp/525lbft peak figures (on VPower), with 480lbft being made available as low as 3500rpm.
The turbo then went on to produce more power at a later date after further mapping and is due to go back for another reference run on RR used above, to ascertain increases against previous benchmark, but 20-30bhp increase seems realistic.
You could call AET Turbos for further information..... mention you require details on the turbo used on the ScoobyNet Project Car.

Guess there are a few standard position turbo's around that power ...
MD321V (Lateral Performance)
MD555 (Turbo Dynamics) there are a few versions of the 555 I believe ... sure Martyn can fill you in.
AET Turbo as Shaun has said.

People need to stop concentrating on peak figures..... it's the whole of the rev range you want to compare and you need to consider use of car and how relevant response is.
I wanted the best of both worlds and believe that quest was realised in the end, but it took many differing specs, time and money. Since my car is now for road use (but will be used for track etc), response is absolute to me. I wouldn't change turbos now unless it gave me more of what I have in every respect, which I don't think is realistic.
Don't get sucked in by marketing spiel...... take in to account real world feedback, from people not actually selling the product.
From my knowledge there is only one other turbo I would consider for all round capability, but this is not to say that apart from these two turbos, nothing else exists that meets my criteria..... I have not tested them all, or have relevant information etc.
It's a minefield and everyone promises to deliver, but unfortunately over the years of using modified turbos I have seen a number of instances of people being let down or short changed.
It is not that easy to spec a turbo..... if it was, then they would all deliver the same results, which is clearly not the case. Some companies have done more testing and research than others.

Assuming all things being equal (i.e the twinscroll housing was matched and the spec delivered as intended), I would expect top end power would be better. I would question whether or not the lowdown grunt would be as good as mine, based on information I have regarding single scroll GT35's running on the same kind of engine set-up as me.
I know Iain Litchfield is working on a couple of high powered Twin Scroll turbos and the theory would suggest that they could work better...... but until things have been tested and proven I am on the fence.

Potential is certainly there for a better than single scroll GT35 set-up.... I am very surprised that the marketing spiel is devoid of any results regarding performance specifics though........ perhaps that is down to bad marketing.
Only one way to find out....... you gonna order one and give it a punt!!!

MD321V
As Shaun says, there is no such thing as best and ultimately it is down to user/buyer choice but as he also says there were an awful lot of other modifications to his engine, cossie heads, cams etc that would have contributed to that figure of 498.5 - how much is up for debate but I would have thought for the money cossie stuff sells for, it needs to be a lot.
The MD321V on mine is still running std UK heads and cams and made 545 / 560 on a 20% mix of E85 (using the std ECU) on Zen's rollers on the same day Shaun got his figure.

This of course will be very relevant in terms of both spool up and outright power.
I have tried a couple of bolt on turbos reputed to be good for 500hp that on Classics really struggled to deliver, in the next couple of days I should have some results for the 500hp rated MD555 on a built 2.5 Newage STi.
Will keep you posted !

Ken,
Your TD06-49 (Same/similar spec' as an FP Green) should be good for circa 450bhp.
Maybe it would be worth getting what you have set up the best way possible, and seeing how that goes, before spending more money.
If you do decide you want to go for more, I would err on the side of caution with the standard rods, and keep the max rpm down below 7000rpm, particularly if you're a torque junkie like Dynamix !
Mark.

Anyone who used one of the RCM GT35 hybrids on a 2.0l oder 2.2l?
What igintion do you run at peaktorque and to the end of the revrange, Banny?
Is this with or without E85?

from what I have read others made 400 - 420 with this same turbo
i have seen figures from 430 to 490 on the the old "rcm gt35 p20"
I have been told the new range spool quicker and have greater top end
