MD321H Vs TD05 20G Vs Garrett GT2871R
Anybody got experience of any of the above Turbo's back to back on a Newage 2 Litre STi If so what's your stats & figures .
The Garrett is supposed to be a less laggy and earlier spooling Turbo than the 20G, but i'm unsure of what it would be like compared to a 321H.
Any views much appreciated

think the MD is a garret hybrid, the 20gram has journel bearings and older technology.
I understand garret hybrid's generally have a crisper and stonger throttle response, spool-up is 15-20% quicker and faster time to boost. Don't know if it's all true but it would have to be to pay double the money. If they held boost for longer then that would really justify the expenditure.
I should look at AET Turbo's buddy, some of the good tuners source turbo's there

I would speak to Harvey Smith mate, he has a range of 20g's at very good prices that are performing very well indeed, I doubt you would be dissapointed with a chat to Harvey

Nothing personally against a 20G, driven a classic wagon running one just found it quite laggy and it seemed to drop off of boost quite quicky.
I've already got 3" Fully decatted Hayward and Scott exhaust, colder firing plugs, uprated fuel pump, APS CAI and ported headers. (along with the appropriate remapping, all work done by Mocom Racing) Gonna change the headers to a set of Tubular ones at the same time as the Turbo. So i'm looking at something that will spool with similiar characteristics as the VF35 but pull harder all the way through the rev range, right to the red line.
If anybody would recomended a different Turbo all together then i'd be only too willing to hear your thoughts.

I understand Harvey's HS380 gets to around 390/400 with good spool.
A lot of chaps have the VF34/35 but the next step seems to be a grey zone, not wanting to lose drivebility and maintaining a really good car for the road.
I'm torn between the more cost effective 380 and something like AET's GT2876

i think you will find that a 20g needs decent heads (like any good turbo) to let it spool. AVCS heads or sti3/4 heads certainly do that. My 20g has been nothing short of superb with full boost of 1.6 bar at 3100rpm on a 2.1.

my 2871r is a great turbo with minimal lag and holds boost to 7k.
half new price of £1200 at £650 delivered which makes it cheaper than a 20g.
it just needs a straight inlet welding on if used for late cars.
peak power was at 6700rpm and on boost from mid to low 3000rpm.

The GT2876 comes out at just under£1600 with fitting kit and all ready to go on

IMOA the MD turbo's do cost a lot of money and i have not seen many MD321H making te clamed 400bhp but i all so guess thats down to a lot of people buying these turbos and then not being able to run the amount of boost you need through them to make the power as they don't have forged bottom ends
I myself have just got a Turbo of Harvey after getting rid of my MD321T as the spool on a 2.0 is far to late!
I will be getting it mapped on Thursday and will let you know my findings, Im all forged up so will be putting a nice 1.7 bar at it to see what it can do
The main thing is can you put the boost through the turbo to get the desierd power? If not whats the point of getting any of the turbo's you have asked about? Get a 18g or one of the vf's and be happy

Std V7 STI + MD321H + the usual bits made 390 bhp on BP Ultimate.
I honestly believe this turbo is crying out to be let loose on a forged motor....
dunx
P.S. ECU only able to cope with 1.55 bar as std. JGM suggests 1.7 with an AVCR is possible. It managed 2 bar with no boost control....

Not sure i'd want to put any more than 1.4-1.5 bar through a standard STi internals in the long term. Whats peoples thoughts on the FP Green?? they seem to offer what i'm looking for. And are £300ish less than a 321H

Don't get a green they are laggy as they can cope with 450bhp. better suited to a 2.5. You need the smallest turbo for the amount of power your looking for. As said before look for a 18 or 20g? Have a word with Harvey and maybe get one of his HS380?

Well worth consideration, Harvey will only supply a known good product and he tests all his products himself so you know you are getting a quality item. If Harvey says his turbos are good then they are good, honestly.

Impressive, earlier boost than my VF34 and not dipping away.
Thanks mate

The best turbo that I have tried on a Newage by far was the Turbo Dynamics MD195s.
This has recently been replaced by the MD555 range and the 400hp rated version should be very similar.
We used 4 of the 195s turbos on Newage cars, all of them made 420+bhp on pump fuel and 2 of them have gone on to make 450+ on a 10% meth mix.
