Default My favourite CEL Code, P0340

First noticed this when getting the car remapped, at high revs in third. As it wasn't causing any problems the ECU was reset and it was fine for a while.

Then about a month after mapping, the CEL came on again at high revs in second. It went off after about 5 restarts, which is normal for a minor code which is no longer detected. Had the camshaft position sensor replaced (P0340 means camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction) with a known working second hand one and it was fine for a week.

Then when 'testing' the new one, CEL came on again at high revs in 2nd. Checked the code and it's P0340 again. Car is still running fine.

It's a 02 WRX Wagon, mods are:

Panel filter.
Prodrive Sports Cat.
Ecutek remap.
And lots of suspension and brake stuff which doesn't matter.

Maybe an important point - I've got a second hand 2001 WRX ECU because it had already been ecutek'd, so saving me a bit of money.

Stuff which could cause it which I have found using the magic what is Google:

1. Given the the sensor was replaced, could it still be a fault here, such as dirty or corroded contacts?

2. Possibly a grounding issue, which can be resolved by rewiring the ground?

3. An actual mechanical issue?

4. Problem with the 2001 ECU?

5. Problem with all bugeye ECU's?

If 4 or 5, is this a code which can be switched off by a mapper?

Your thoughts ladies and gentlemen please...

Usually occurs when you bounce off the limiter.

Solution is to not bounce off the limiter

Hope that helps

Cheers! If it only happened then it would be ok, but it comes on between 6000-6500, which even grannies get to.

Can't remember which service that is - if 50k, then about 12k miles and 2 years ago. It's done about 59k now.

sounds like just the same problem I had (with a few other my02 owners) no one found a fix as far as I was aware

i did think about using a spacer for the cam sensor but never got round to it

I found it went after 5 restarts, so didn't bother reseting the ECU

sorry I can't help any more

With a Tactrix cable & laptop you can download your ECU map and disable the warning for that particular code.
I did it with my P0420 code when I had a decat downpipe fitted (after living with it for 2 years thinking it was my only option).

It's a normal bugeye trait .... "they all do that" a dealer would say. Personally I'd just forget about it like I do LOL.

It's possible to map out P0420 as it's got nothing to do with the engine ..... but not sure if you can map out more important engine CEL's like Camshaft, misfires EGT's etc.

Its actualy down to the very poor grounding the MY01/02 bugeyes have, its interferance from the ignition system fooling the ecu into thinking there is a problem.

cheers

Hi Bob

I hope you and all the family are well and it's great to hear from you on an SN thread

My Bugeye is running 100% sweet despite looking nothing like it left the factory in Japan all those years ago in 2002.

Back in those days John Banks was fiddling around with mapping and I guess Mark Aigin was just starting out....... I wonder if Andy Forrest was still fettling marine engines LOL

I always wondered why the bugeye threw these CELS..and now I know

Do you remember the "playground fight" between me and Ninnybobs to get our bugeye's to get over 400 BHP

It might start again ...........
