Default Few issues with my new classic

Im new to this forum, so 1st'ly, hello all!

Im new to the wonderful world of Subaru, so go easy on me
I took a MY96 turbo wagon as p/x for my MG ZR turbo. When i went to see it last week i took it out for a long drive and it was running great.
Picked it up last night and on the way home the speedo went mental, it started jumping about. I reckon i was doing about 50, but the needle was jumping back and forth between 80-100mph.
Also, it'll rev fine through every gear, but when its in 5th gear at anything above 2500rpm, it starts to misfire. Not really bad, but enough to be worrying. I thought it was because id let the fuel go too low, but after 90 miles its still the same. Anyone got an ideas? Spark gaps maybe? Funny how it only does it in 5th gear. It boosts up fine with no misfire.

Think there are some electrical gremlins in this car. I tried out the front fog lights on the way home and as soon as id pressed it the check engine light came on. Then it went back off about 20 secs later.

Id really appreciate some help from you kind people. Im still learning about these high strung jap machines and im a bit worried about the car.

Its like owning a Rover again! Thought these Subarus were meant to be reliable lol

Have a feel up behind the dash and make sure the speedo cable is pushed onto the back of the clock properly.

Should sort your erratic speedo.

Thank you mate

The boy i bought it off took the headunit out before i picked it up so its he has maybe pulled something out on the loom.

I was worried as my old ZR turbo speedo ran through the ABS, so if the speedo was faulty it threw up all sorts of problems.

Without being rude, it is a thirteen year old car, I have only had mine seven years so far and it's never let me down.

I expected the battery to die, so wasn't going to sulk over that.

Sounds like and earthing problem, as you say he could have loosened anything under the dash for a connection.

Good luck !

I know mate, it is 13 years old after all like you say
Just needs a bit of TLC i think. Like i say, ive been MG Rover all my driving life, i dropped a Vitesse engine in my ZR no bother, but i just dont know where to start with these high strung jap engines lol

The car is mint otherwise tho, its been well looked after. Couldnt get a straight sale with my ZR, and always wanted an Impreza so thought "what the hell" ill take one as a p/x lol

Loving it so far, its a really nice, solid feeling car, and the handling in the wet is amazing to me coming from a powerful FWD car

220bhp in a car that weighs a ton will hastle most things from a rolling start!
You didnt read my post right obviously.

I could easily keep up with a WRX in my ZR provided it was dry

Yeah it was a good laugh mate, but the Rovers arent.............how can i say?
Built the best??? lol
It was alot of fun as people just didnt expect it to be so fast.
But it was a challenge just keeping the thing on the road, never mind upping the performance!
Like i say from a rolling start, i could keep up with the best, but it was too unreliable as a main car. If i was in a position to keep it as a 2nd car i would have held onto it, but it was just not practical. I get a company car quite alot so the Scooby is ideal for me to run about in the rest of time.
Plus i can get my dog in the boot with my new wagon!
