without adding a throttle kicker it will be just pops and bangs.

Not quite true....

Without a throttle kicker and using the ABV with suitable fuel cuts and ignition retard, the overrun boost will typically sit at -0.3 bar; say 0.3-0.4 bar higher than without the ALS activated. The pops and bangs are a bonus.

If you have this feature and are only getting the pops and bangs then the ALS calibrations just need optimising.

Ah, so its keeping the turbo spinning that bit faster with throttle closed by putting in some fuel, which explodes and gives pop/bangs as bonus.

PS what's a throttle kicker?

It fires the spark ATDC which has the effect of putting the combustion energy release into the turbo. The fuel is actually reduced to control EGTs.

A throttle kicker allows the throttle to remain open (by typically 20-30%) even when the pedal is released. This allows even more air through the compressor housing thus allowing the turbo to continue spinning and develop positive boost on overrun. The kicker is usually a vacuum or electrically operated plunger that acts on the throttle linkage when the ALS is switched on.

I wouldn't really class 0.3 bar as anti lag

.....need to get air into the ex manifold as well as fuel for proper 'bang' (beit throttle kicker or direct into manifold)

over a bar of boost is easily obtainable with 'proper' ALS.......but as mentioned not very good for the life of the turbo.

You made the statement that it was "just pops and bangs"...Our experience of mapping indicates that if you have reduced the vacuum on overrun by 0.3-0.4 bar then the turbo spool up is improved and hence a degree of anti-lag has been achieved.

Obviously if you go into positive boost on overrun then the result is better - either by using a throttle kicker or "jacked open throttle - but turbo life is reduced. The first stage is a good compromise between reduced turbo life and improving throttle response.

Steve can the Simtek be set up for full throttle gear changes and would it be of any advantage?

....just so people don't get confused with 'real' ALS and a lot of tuners ALS (the 2 sound different as well) as most people just want for the noise.

would have thought that it would be able to do this as the evo boys are doing it on the standard ecu.

And would this be an improvment over the AL?

This is an upgrade option that we have done on some rally applications. You need to have a trigger input to tell the ECU that the gear lever is being moved(we use a load sensor) or use a clutch activated switch.really works best on "dog engagement " gear boxes.

Personally would only use FTGC on a dog box; particularly knowing how "chocolate" the OEM 5 speed box is....

Not a lot really. You need to control the EGTs to reduce the potential for damage to the turbo. This requires an apprpriate ALS strategy or closed loop ALS control linked to EGT.
What ECU are you using?
