Unhappy loud whining noise

Need a little help guys.

just picked up an incredibly cheap classic WRX

no too shabby but it does have a vey loud whine coming from the engine/engine bay.

its pitch increases and decreases with the engine revs. It does seem to make more noise when turning the steering wheel. and the noise seems a little louder from the drivers side. For me this would indicate a PAS pump problem. But I was hoping someone might manage to point me in the right direction of how to check for this . Or if they can point out another suspect that would be great.

cheers in advance

Keith

Ask the wife to wait outside, see if it goes then! Sorry couldn't resist!

Yeah sounds like PAS to me, try the boom handle test.

Put a broom handle or any other similar item against the potentially offending item, e.g. pas pump and place the other end to the bone just under your ear, this will allow you to isolate the the source of the noise.

Hey guys

cheers for the help.

ended up putting about a quarter of a litre of PAS fluid in the reservoir and that silenced the racket.

now just got to fix the over fuelling , the slipping clutch and the noisy gearbox.
