just had this problem on mine, a slight knock on tickover, then worse when increasing revs, it spun a big end bearing. stripped the engine, needed new crank, rods, bearings etc etc found out 2 exhaust valves had burnt out and both heads cracked ! get your check book out

mine has a tiny rattling noise on start up when its cold, and a tiny nock, it goes after you rev it past 2k, and when the engines warm hardly hear it what so ever, ive watched vids on ebay of alsorts of loud knockin noises were they sound like diesels and its nowhere near as drastic. a guy whos into his scoobs told me its just standard cold impreza classic start up noise.

but you cant help be paranoid when it comes to your wheels and your wallet!

ive just thought about putting a stop to it by taking it to a reputable company like pro sport and say just give it a health check

Could be :
Timing belt tensioner.
Front Pulley loose.
Big ends worn.

Get a specialist to have a listen to it - may save you money in the long run.

normal knock/piston slap when cold is normal, the pistons were designed to fit the bore when hot rather than cold etc so the cold start noise.

get a sound clip up

Could be wrong sized head gaskets. Theres so many different thickness off head gaskets available for subarus, depending what engine you have the gaskets could be 0.7mm - 1.7mm+, it depends on the thickness that came out compared to what went back on
