Default Decat downpipe and heat wrap

Hi, I am looking at getting a decat downpipe for a 97 classic, and am wondering if it needs to be heat wrapped, I have a friend who has heat wrapped his, yet some people say doesn't need it, so was wondering if I need to or not?

Thanks

David

Its best to wrap it as they are thin wall stainless steel with no built in heat shields like the standard cat down pipe I did run mine for a year without and have seen it glowing on a dyno but really any heat that extreme should be wrapped , also on mine i could hear the turbo high pitch whistle just as boost was starting to climb which was fun for about a week then it just gets on your nerves this was cured once i wrapped the down pipe i used 50ftx2" of wrap to do mine and this only just enough to get down to the gear box bracket below the car may get some more to carry on to the end of the down pipe

thanks, my next question then is how do you wrap it?

Literally just wrap it round, how does it stay attached?

thanks

I think the idea is to wet it so as to be able to wrap it as tightly as poss.

When the water evaporates, then it becomes really tight against the pipes.

The way to do it, is to start at the end, wrap round once, and stick a tie on it. then over lap about 50% everytime. as above the wetter the better, go for 24hours or over night, so its soaked completely. At the the other end wrap it round over on its self cut and put another tie on, remembering to keep it tight as poss.

Silly as this may sound - Don't use zip ties or anything plastic only use the metal bands to hold the wrap in place.

I have a d cat pipe for sale for a classic, it has the bellmouth to mate to the centre section. Its new and unused. For sale at £60 delivered. A bargain. With regard to the heat wrapp, soak the wrap in a bucket of water, wear trousers and a top you'll never wear again and use circ clips on the pipe to hold the material tight. Its doesnt matter if you leave the clips on, just leave to dry for a day or two then put on the car. It will harden and stay secure.

Yeah I should have put, to use stain less steel ties, someone might go and put nylon ties, that'll be funny, be nice until they heat up and break/melt. HA
