Default Fastest spooling turbo required max output 320bhp

Hi I currently have a WRX UK300 with an APS SR30 running 1.35 Bar and making around 310 BHP.

This takes quite some time to spool but is very good from 3300- redline

My wife wants more low down grunt, ie quicker spooling, what is the best turbo (remap allowed for) to give 300-320 bhp but lower down faster spool?

Whats the thoughts on VF34, TD05-big 16G?

Thanks very much

if you could give an idea of at what point 1 bar of boost may be available it would be very helpful, cheers again

if you are only wanting to go to just over 300bhp then i would probably say put the standered sti turbo on,vf35.you will be able to pick one up for a few hundred quid, its a no mess direct bolt on turbo, quick spool and will still be good for around the 340-350bhp mark.

Td04 Hybrid is a 300bhp turbo IIRC.

VF35 next quickest to spool. Good for 340 with the right supporting mods.

imo a 300 break on the hybrid turbo for fast road use will feel same as the 320break

The Turbo's I have on my list then are

TD05-16G (avail for £440 new)
VF34 around £580 new

Watch that you're buying genuine turbos! £580 new for a VF34 sounds too cheap, they are more expensive than that from the ebay sellers.

Personally I'd source one form a late STI and you'll at least know it's genuine.

i would second that have heard a couple of stories of people buying turbo's cheap off ebay and finding out what they bought isnt the genuine thing ....

If pushed hard with about 1.35bar, I think they're capable of c.340bhp. They do keep pulling to the redline too, with full boost made by about 3,500rpm (maybe a couple of hundred earlier ). Best thing is you could chance on a 2nd hand eBay one (or on here of course!) for about £100 - look out for a genuine person selling because he's upgraded toa bigger turbo.

The 35 will out spool the 16g all things being equal.

A couple of things to consider. A properly ported and wrapped set of oem headers will make a big difference to the spool/response.

You don't mention this, but I presume you have removed ALL 3 cats (inc up-pipe)..?

You say that the SR30 is very good from 3300rpm, but where do you get 1bar of boost (4th gear foot to the floor from 2k)..?

My VF35, with every supporting mod you could throw at it, makes 1bar at ~2700-2800 and peaks at 1.55bar by 3k, holding 1.3bar to 6k.. Been dyno'd at 348 with 330 torque.

Believe me ,it makes one hell of a quick real world road car..

Turbo choice is important, but it's the supporting mods that make the difference between good and great..!

An AF TD04 hybrid would be my other choice for a real world fast road car..

i used to run a vf35 and that was a quick spooling turbo get the waste gate ported to help stop boost creep. i have also had a vf24 in my opinion the vf35 was better.

car ran 325bhp on vf24 and 340bhp on vf35

any body suggested headers or maybe porting yet?

Cheaper than a tubby id say and will spool quicker.

Just how quick do you want it to spool?

What does it make full boost at?

Don't you think that is a little too small for the power target Shaun ?

As far as spool up is concerned, I have never seen anything spool up as quick - took ages to get the map right for that to keep it smooth. Awesome though !

Try Harvey for the headers (standard ported & wrapped), i've got them on mine with a VF34 and it starts to spool from around 2500 with full boost at 3100-3200

vf28 (p1 or STI5/6) or vf35

VF28 is nicer drive, less chance of compressor surge.
