What Bar should my MY96 UK be standard?
#1
Hello,
I have finally bought a boost gauge and intend sticking it on at some point next week.
Anyone know what boost I should be seeing standard?
Assuming that the car should be fairly similar I hope this should tell me how accurate my gauge is.
Cheers

Hi,
standard with cats on I reckon around 0.8 to 0.9 bar. Depends how recently you've cleaned your boost solenoid.
Mine was at 0.8 bar bog standard
Decat it and you'll be looking at nearer a bar
Cheers

Never cleaned the boost solenoid!!!
Assuming the dealer won't have either when servicing it?
How do I go about that?
Still have the cats on at the moment.
Just an STi Backbox is the only mod enginewise so far....

Mounted on the driver's side suspension mount should be a cylindrical jobbie that has three pipes and some wires going into it.
Take this off and squirt plenty of brake cleaner into it (and into the pipes too). You'll probably find that a load of crap comes out.
Put it all back together and go for a blast. Or you can connect together the two connectors under the dash after using the brake cleaner (sends the car into mad cow mode - ECU reset) but I've never been able to find them on mine!! I've found that just the brakecleaner and a blast does the trick.
You'll find if the solenoid is dirty, your car won't hold boost very well.
Think the dealer would do it for you if you ask them, but wouldn't think they'd do it as part of any service. (?)
Mine was dirty once and boost fell to 9psi (0.6 bar or so)
Cheers

Cheers Rich.
About to take the car out for a spin... hoping the hessitation will have gone but will have to buy some brake cleaner and do that job when I fit the gauge in the week
ho ho JGM

Hessitation is still there...
I read the other thread Here
Will I do any damage by just pulling off all the pipes and spraying lots of cleaner in and then going for a blast?
Or is it better to run the engine whilst doing it?
The pipe to my solineod from the air box snapped so was taking in unfilter air so this must be what is causing my hessitation... I hope..

Fitted the gauge lasty night and I am running 0.75bar standard!
I popped to Halfords and managed to get some brake cleaner so will be doing the boost solenoid clean tonight probably..
Still goes like stick, so hoping after the clean the boost might be up slighty.
The gauge is showing -0.75 at tick over?
If the clean doesn't up the boost then I might have to add my bleed valve... 1bar shouldn't put to much extra stress on things or maybe 0.9...

0.75 is slightly on the low side, but clean the solenoid and you should be seeing 0.8 I would have thought.
Mine went down as low as 0.6 bar with a dirty solenoid.
-0.75 at tickover is normal, don't worry.
I ran a bleed valve for a while and you should easily be able to run 1.0bar plus. (I ran 1.2 for a while but that was with Optimax and Millers - now running 1.4 bar using a HKS EBC instead of the bleed valve)
Bleed valves are ok, in that they are a cheap and easy performance mod, but I'd invest in a Lambda link or similar to check you aren't running lean, just to be safe. The other thing about bleed valves is that you are constantly adjusting them. As underbonnet temp increases, your boost will also increase. Also changes in weather from hot to cold will affect it too. EBC is much better although they are a lot dearer. Be careful with the bleed valve when setting up as a small turn of the adjuster can make a big difference in boost so take your time setting it up.
When I put mine on, initially a quarter turn made little difference, but as you go higher up in boost, the size same turn makes more of a difference. So just take it steady.
Bet you inside a few weeks you'll be winding it up past a bar
Cheers

The bleed valve was fitted to my MR2 before hand and I set that to 15psi and left it and it remained at 15psi what ever the weather etc.. I guess the engine in the front gets better cooling and therefore the weather makes more of a difference?
I couldn't afford a broken engine at the moment.. so I am unlikely to wind it up too high.
I am fairly happy with the current power, just if it is so low on boost then I might as well wind it up slightly
Glad -0.75 on tick over is normal
Pretty cool that I was keeping up with a mates X-type 3.0 V6 sport and only running 0.75... I should be going past once running 1bar
Cheers for the help.
