I have had one engine rebuilt by api, and rebuilt one myself both times they started first turn and were pretty quiet straight away. Did you turn it over with the cam sensor disconected to prime the oil system?

Engine's with hydraulic lifters can take a while to quieten down until the lifters have fully pumped up.
Seeing as yours is an STi 3~4 and provided you set the valve clearances correctly and the piston to bore clearance right - shouldnt have any excessive noise.
If the idle is up and down - you might have an air leak/pipe off on the inlet manifold.

valve clearance???

ive had it running and out on the road for test drive, i have three problems

1. the clutch wont bleed up properly? (whats the proper procedure)
2. the idling problem? (ive had to umplug the idle con valve to slow the idle for now)
3. my coolent keeps boiling out of header? not sure if i have an air lock or a blockage? the temp gauge start to rise near the top? my pipes at front of engine are all hot but the one to heater matrix are cold? the heater also are blowing cold?

thanks for the help guys, dont know what id do with out some of you!

sounds like u have a air lock in the water system if all the pipes aint getting hot or stat is faulty, the tapping noise should go once oil has filled the lifters if there hydraulic if not check valve clearences and how about trying ecu reset
