Default Burning Smell

Hi guys, wonder if any one can help, I have a Forester Sti 2 years old, when I hold my clutch down and rev the engine the exhaust pops and there is a smell of burning. Notice it loads when I do hill starts. Any one have any ideas what it may be? Thanks

slipping clutch?

On a flat surface put in the clutch, engage 5th gear, ensure brakes are on tight and release the clutch. Does the car stall? If it doesn't your clutch is slipping.
