A mate of mine has a 97 Forester XT and it started making a humming sound which seems to come from the rear, but its only around 3000 RPM... Rather strange... Does anyone have any idea of what it could be? I thought it may be the diff.

Appreciate any advice.

 

Sounds like diff bearings - although he'll struggle to have a 97 XT as their is no such thing, model line up at 97 (non JDM) was GLS or nothing, S-turbo/GT arrived in 99, XT not until 03, if he has a JDM he could have an STB or TTB suggest he gets over to subaruforester.org (EU and Australasia forums at the bottom of the forums page) and meet the gangs! Alternatively he could try ozfoz.com as they are a friendly bunch - even to Kiwi's!

Thanks mate, you're absolutely right! Ask me about GC8's or any other Impreza and I can tell you all the facts, but Foresters... I know nothing... ha ha... Its a STB. I'll keep this thread updated.
