help with timing please!!

Default help with timing please!!

hey all, engine is built up but have a little issue? when i took the timing off i marked it up, but with me cleaning the block up i washed the marks off
cant remember if the timing had been advanced? with it been mapped? what i want to know is: is this possible? im gonna have a go at it but on standard marks? how do i time it up? i have done other engines but never a scoob. usually its cylinder 1 & 4 tdc, and the exhaust valves open? when i line the centree pulley up no cylinders are at tdc?

Help PLease?

another problem for ya, im atually sat doing it with the laptop at side of me now and ive lined all the pullies up and on the cams to the left of me dont line up at the marks i made? is there any chance it could of been advanced in the past?

thanks mate, any one fancy pm me there no i can have a word? pretty please i have now timed it up to what i marked it anc the original markings dont meet? but however ive turned the engine more than 8 times now and my marks line bk up perfectly? it had not locked up once?

are you not using a new belt with markings on?

you need to time it correctly.. ignore how it was it might have jumped teeth on the belt or been fitted wrong.

it ran perfect before the bottomend knock? and im 90% sure it was that way when i took it off? i just dont want to time it up standard if its been mapped to the advance and them it det?????

You should get the map checked and tweaked once run in anyways..

Normally only happens when you have Vernier Pulley's fitted, so the cams can be dialed in and then advanced/retarded to suit the engine build spec.

ok them guys i'll time it bk up tomorrow on standard marks? just cant see how my marks line up, the marks on the timing all line up with the pullies and notches on cover, but the main 1 is it still turns freely and does not lock up?
why is this? all over engines ive done, lock up if its wrong?

because you are only one tooth out..

you really wouldn't want it to lock up and bend a valve.

right mate thanks for that. i'll have a go on standard marks when i finish work tonight. i just thought if it was out it would hit a valve and lock up while i was turning it by hand??

Takes 3teeth before valve touches piston if I recall correct

right it makes sense now thankyou

does any 1 ever advance it to gain power? i know it works on the vauxhalls? advancing the inlet cam to allow more fuel into the cylinder, in theory making more power?

not without measuring valve lift etc.. and unlikely to be done as much as a tooth and unlikely to be just one bank

Before you even advance you need an exact base point and as mentioned above this won’t be done on the standard pulleys, which to add are a few degrees out before you even start.

I have seen some cars come in with the timing 180 DG and running But with just a few teeth out and not correctly set up can expire an engine in seconds.

could mine be 180 out? the lines on the belt lines up with pulley marks which line up with notches in cam cover? it also turns freely with no trouble?

You are using the "line" on the crank gear and not the "triangle".
The "Line" is the Safe position with all the pistons halfway up/down the bore and should be used when doing a cam belt change.
The "triangle" is the TDC mark and used for degreeing the cams/leakdown test etc etc.

the triangle? no i used the marks as in your pic above think it should be ok. i'll find out at weekend when its bk in.

If its as per the picture i posted above, then it will be ok.
Poor picture below, but the line you use is at 12 o'clock and the triangle is at 3 .
