Default closed deck

What is a closed deck engine? What years were they produced from,are there any identifying numbers/markings on the block etc.I understand they are the mutts nuts,Why?
One thread i have read mentions cross hatching on top of the engine block as one possible means of id but how accurate is this?

Cross Hatching on oil filter casting etc is 100% CDB
