Default suspected big end bearing failure :(

i think the big end has gone on my 97wrx. I was coming back from Bristol last night and took it up to a brisk pace on the motorway, lifted and then had a horrible rattling noise coming from the engine. Had to get it recovered, RAC guy says hes pretty much certain its big end bearing failure. Not sure what to do as bought it a year ago for 3250. Since then i have spent quite a bit on it: 4pot calipers; disks, pads, organic clutch, replacement uppipe, decat downpipe, general service, fuel pump, Rota wheels and tyres and now it blows up on me!

Not sure what to do as i love the car!!!! sell for parts? engine rebuild? engine replacement?.... nightmare Happy new year lol

its up to you . You could get it rebuilt for £2000 or take a gamble on a second hand engine for £750-£1250 if you think your up to it you could rebuild it you self for about £1000.
I personally dont like breaking cars myself because it takes ages and you end up with a pile of scrap on your drive.

thanks for the info guys, garage is going to take a proper look tommorow but if 2 grand seems to be what its gonna cost i reckon i'lll end up breaking seeing as the car cant be worth any more than 2500 in the current market. Just cant justify that amount on a rebuild

hey mate
i had the same thing happen to my 04 wrx had only had it 3 months and the warrenty had just expired. had the engine rebuilt and new clutch it ended up costing me 3699!! i only paid £8000 for the car still chasing the garage to try and get some money back. if i was you i would go for a second hand engine it will be cheaper and if you get a garage to do it they should be able to check it is ok before putting it in. plus you will be able tio reuse the bits of your car. sorry mate no what your going through. cheers colin

Thanks Colin gutting feeling isnt it, glad yours is up and running again tho!

Anyone know anything about these guys? might give them a call tommorow £989 supply and fit. I have noticed it says 'prices start from' so more than likely not this cheap as i have already been quoted 2100 elsewhere.

dont know if you are capable of rebuilding an engine yourself but i have just broken my 93 wrx it has a closed deck block good condition but standard internals, would need a new oil pump obviously and new bearings but you can have my short motor (it is in bits now) for £300
