Default Have I goosed a Drive Shaft?

Whilst coasting on the motorway today I heard what sounded like a slapping noise from the front near side wheel, I pulled over on the hard shoulder expecting a flat tyre but to my surprise noticed no flat tyre and thought that some obstruction may have been caught in the wheel arch. I continued my journey and the noise started again, but this time was more of a knock upon each wheel revolution, i slowed down and made it home and noticed it was intermittent round bends. On my drive i wiggled the drive shafts but both appeared to be sturdy, however i noticed that the front brake caliper was clicking in forward and reverse, the pads are also very low. Anyone throw any light on the situation ? Do damaged driveshafts have an apparrent play??

Thanks
