Default Replace Maf sensor box 07 imprezza

I am recently new to imprezza just having purchased an 07 plated hawkeyed
wrx obviously i am like a good percentage of scooby owners in that I want to extract as much power as possible so i fitted a K&N panel filter
after recently fitting an afterburner rearbox and a straight through center section exhaust I left it for a while before thinking of my next step i realised
the air filter didnt appear to do a lot and infact it seemed as if it had developed a flat spot on the throttle in fact the car just didnt seem as responsive so i started to look for an alternative after looking at cold air systems and finding they dont really do many for the new age 07 shape or so it seems as i said I am new to scoobys I couldnt undertand why but is it as I have just found out because the Maf sensor is installed in the airbox anyway my sister had a universal cone induction kit laying around doing nothing so i borrwed it.
I have fitted these before but noticing the formentioned maf sensor positioning I didnt think it was possible to fit without the maf sensor pipe which I assume you can purchase i dont know about cars but surley you cant just remove the sensor as the car wouldnt run or if it did would run like a bag o you know what.
So I made one i found a tube 76mm in diam cut a 30mm hole in it for the
maf sensor and fitted the pipe and filter.
It runs fine it doesnt miss fire or anything yet but my question is.......
......can I just do this is their any tolerances or is it just a case that so long as the sensor is contained internally between the air filter and the inlet
then its ok .
as i say it seems to work but will i damage the engine I dont know if the car has anymore power to be honest I doubt it and the claims these manufacturers have about power increases from them but the flat spot is gone she rumbles more like a scooby and seems to be more responsive.
Any thoughts I have saved ppossibly a couple of hundred pounds but at what costs..
