You need the applied model code to find out exactly what model it is and here is some info for you.

Which Car is a WRX STi

He has not provided the applied model code e.g. GC8A48D, this is also on the vin tag and will confirm what model it is.

Yeah, but in this instance, the Applied Model code wouldn't necessarily help in ascertaining if it's the appropriate engine or not - it could be an exchange engine of the wrong type, for example.

So if those numbers on the engine that the OP posted actually mean something, then we need an expert to decypher.... APIDavid, where are you when we need you?!

wrchammy, if you're getting desperate, then try to PM or email APIDavid. Please bear in mind he's very busy, so may not be able to answer you immediately.

My sti 3 engine, which I had removed had no letters on the pistons.

Version 1 ~ 2 Dogbone Pistons (cast and forged) have L and R stamped on the crown, Version 3 ~ 4 pistons have no L and R markings.

Version 1 ~ 2 Dogbones crawling off me bench

The only difference between non-STi and STi v3/4 blocks is the cast and forged pistons respectively. Everything else the same. The heads are the main difference.

Are the rods, crank and bearings same-same?!?
Where are the difference in rev-ability? (valves and valve-springs?)
