Default engine out, compression test help

i have just put a new cambelt on an engine that is out of the car, the engine is complete with inlet and turbo etc etc. literally as it was taken out the car. engine turns over fine and sounds like its got compression and also pumps loads of air out the spark plug holes when u test it. i tried spinning the engine with a drill on the crank, the engine spun at a reasonable rate but not enough to produce any readings at all lol.
how can i compression test it. should i wire a starter up to a battery. or just do a leakdown. to get an accurate reading i suppose u need the engine at around 800-1k revs.
also i had all the spark plugs out and tested 1 cylinder at a time. i take it this is the right way.
cheers
