Coolant temp sensor perhaps.

On previous fuel threads BP Ultimate has proved unpopular with imprezas.

If the sensor gives the ecu a false reading then the ecu cannot correctly run the car (in this case it thinks the coolant may be cold when it is warm or the other way round).
I've had to change mine (93wrx) when i had a poor cold start and slightly dodgy idle.

For some reason BP Ultimate has been known to cause the ECU to pull timing, IIRC. Another member/mod on here, New Scooby 04 knows more about this issue.

myblackwrx, when you had cold starting issues because of the temp sensor, did the starter pinion engage the ring gear trying to turn the engine?

Or was it that the solenoid would click okay but the engine wouldn't turn? Then a few turns of the key later, the pinion eventually engaged and the engine fired?

toigye, when my temp sensor was going i didn't get the CEL coming on and it didn't register on the Select Monitor.
the actual sensor is cheap (about £20ish) and is relatively easy to change but you can always check the codes manually here Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Scoobypedia / Scoobypedia under the 'ECU' heading

Joz my engine would fire up fine but then the idle would go up and down from nearly stalling to about 1300 approx

Thanks.

That's helped, as now I'm certain that my starter is simply just tired, as the solenoid clicks away okay, but takes a few turns of the key before the pinion decides to get its butt into gear and come out to join the party, lol
