Default Aligning clutch on flywheel - am I missing something?

I'm trying to align the clutch on the flywheel and it doesn't seem to want to get centred. I've got two dowels on the flywheel and three separate holes on the clutch cover where they could locate. All look much the same as each other. Then you've got the six bolts. So I can fit the cover up onto the dowels, loosely put the six bolts through the cover into the flywheel no problem and their holes are right there where they should be. I can move the clutch plate around easily enough with the bolts loose so I can get the splined hole centred around the flywheel spigot bearing.

Everything OK apart from the metal circlip/cage thing that the release bearing fits to is all over the shop. There's no way it's close to centred? Am I doing something wrong?

The clip fits to the clutch cover first, and the release bearing snaps into it when fitting the engine to the box.
The clip should be tight into the cover

Get hold of an alignment tool. Just a piece of plastic to hold clutch plate in place while you tighten everything up.

I used a tapered 1/2" drive socket, 10mm i think, which was perfect for alignment

Or, if you've killed any vampires lately, you could use this quick fix...

I think I've figured it out and I'm a tit. I think the block was sitting on the bench slightly tipped back so it looked misaligned even though my head was looking at it straight.

I've tried again and I think I've got it... thanks for all the replies!

That'd make sense.
