Default How could you tell a leaking flexi up pipe?

how could you tell if a flexi up pipe was leaking?

i think the sensor on the exhaust manifold is just before the flexi section, so how could you know if it was leaking or not?

and i havnt heat wrapped them yet, but when i do, do i want to wrap over the flexi bit aswel?

When my up-pipe split the boost control was not very good, maximum boost wasn't acheived consistently. Obviously caused by exhaust gases escaping before reaching the turbo.

Also burning/charing could be seen on the heat wrap around the up-pipe in the area of the split, so I would say wrap it completely.

Hope this helps.

You don't want to wrap the flexi part. I had a helix flexi on my car for more than 3 years until it gave up a couple of months ago at a trackday. You could hear it blow and it burnt through my water feed and oil return hoses and made it smoke like mad.

You are better in the long run with a solid up-pipe but it should last if good enough quality

Hope that helps.

dammit! it probably is leaking then, when i started her up this morning in the rain, got a bit of smoke/condensation rise up out of the front somewhere, near the drivers side bonnet vent. so guessing this is it.

quite pissed off as i got it second hand and the guy said it was alright. can these be fixed with anything without welding?

if your floor it, and not getting full boost till around 5 or 6 k, that cant be right can it?

will wrap the flexi in some heat wrap if not just for a bit so i can see if its leaking or not

I think I must have a cracked up pipe on my 96 STi V3 Wagon. Very smilar to you don't get boost to very late in the rev range and boost is a little sporadic sometimes. Feels like car is boosing fine most of the time but it doesn't feel like all the boost reaches the turbo so can only assume it's either the intercooler pipe work or the manifold/up pipe.
