Default HELP - CARS USING OIL

Got a '99 imprez (pix in site) had since february....last week did a straight run of 420 miles all motorway and just around the 80mph mark, was showing full on the dipstick before left but empty when arrived!!!! use 10/60 millers or valvoline (not mixed though!!) and same again on the return journey, full to start and after 420 miles on motorway, empty!! But its not happening on everyday journeys etc and i got no leaks or blowing oil through exhaust. the oil temp and pressure no different either!!! ANY ideas????

Reminds me of a situation I had with an MR2. It was fine for the first few months I had it till I took a round trip of about 900miles. From then on it started consuming oil till I had it rebuilt. I don't know if a compression test would show you if your oil control rings are worn.

Are you checking the oil in exactly the same circumstances? Are you checking it when cold and after a lengthy stand? Oil expands, hence you should ensure your level is between L and F. If its upto F when cold and it expands, you will burn some oil. What is the cars mileage / history?

always check my oil and been fine - work and back etc. But because was going to see family and was 420miles in 1 go, checked everything and oil was at Full mark (not the notch) and car had been sat through the night. Did the 420miles and a bit more and around the 600mile mark, on cold start didnt think felt right, so checked oil and was just 1mm on the dipstick so hardly registering. Added 1.5l 10/60 oil, did the 420mile return trip, car was stood level for 24 hours, checked it and again was only just 1mm onto the dipstick! got no leaks and exhaust isnt stinking of oil or blue and no white etc in oil cap! cars got FSH and on 90k.

How fast you were driving?
I think that there is a compression loss. Lite engine wear and oil goes right to cylinders.
Check your compression on a cold engine, then add some oil to the cylinder and measure it again.

Was just cruising at 80mph in 1 go did 420miles all on motorway. someone has said maybe its a leak in the turbo? Also all the dials stayed the same, temp didnt go up or down, no warning lights and the cars going great, no loss in power etc.

any pools of oil under the car whilst standing?

scoobs over time suffer with oil leaks around the rocker covers, under normal driving this wouldnt usually leak out a lot, but as soon as the car is stationary this is when you would get the leak. Check for oil on the floor and a visual inspection around the engine bay, and also the undertray if still fitted. Also you can check the intercooler to see if that has any oil in it (fail(ing) turbo) Failing that get it too a garage.

Have a look inside the intercooler, if it has a good covering of oil, it will be the "seals" on the turbo.

If not look towards the engine

spoke to garage that did all the work on it, said either the Turbo or worse case the oil control rings...in which case be a full engine strip down and then put together again....going in for diagnostic next wednesday!!! As for above Q's, isn't any oil on floor or in engine...at garage they revved it and no unusuall smokeuntil they did it and the turbo kicked in, was bit smoke with blue tinge to it!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like rings to me. If it's driving fine now with little or no smoke then drive as you would, only rebuild it when it needs it. Mines been using oil for over a year and still going strong just top it up each week. Don't see any smoke and their are no leaks just uses oil. Boxers are pretty heavy breathers regardless.

It's to hard to make any forecasts. It depends on other engine parts condition and engine block itself.
