Default Knocking sound from cold

Hi there

Started my 2006 WRX 2.5 this morning and heard a knocking sound from the bottom end? - sounded heavier than tappets - it was -3c and the car had stood since Friday night? - noise disapeared after max 5 secs - i have never heard it before and it drove fine 30 miles to work? - car has done 38.5k with FSSH.

Checked the oil level and it's fine?

should i get it checked out while its under Warranty or is it normal?

cheers

Kev

Wouldn't worry about it, mate. All 3 of mine have 00, 03, and 06 with PPP made similar sounds when started in similar temps. If it lasted any longer than 5 secs, I would get it checked out.

I WOULD worry about it.

It happened to mine and eventually turned out to be the cambelt idler pulley at the front of the engine. It could have sheared and caused untold damage. Luckily it didnt.

It transmits the sound into the block and sound horribly like big ends.

Worth getting done on warranty as it is a common fault.

Question

Duncan, does the the knackered idler pulley noise rise in concert with increased revs, which could further compound the mistaken 'belief' that a big end has gone?

Yes. It was a loud knocking/thudding type noise getting louder up until about 2500-3000 then it went away. Went away when warm too until it got really bad and stayed for good.

Thanks for the replies

The noise i got this morning was there for max 5 seconds and disapeared i would guess as the oil got round? as the car was stood since Friday in the cold temps.

After the knock at start nothing after that

and fine on cold start tonight? - all be not -1c

i had put it down to perhaps the fact that my Subaru stealer had filled it with cheap oil? - dare they do such a thing???? - particularly as mine is on the free servicing deal????

it is due a service in 1400 miles so i will get them to check out the cam pulley at the service

i am going to take it to Cross Roads at Treddington this time as i have totally lost faith in Carstins now as they scratched my car again last time they had it in to replace the rear struts under warranty - that's the second time they have done that - and they will never admit to it

they cannot understand why i don't want it cleaned after service - if they can't wash it without scratching it i would rather they didn't bother.

defo time for a change of dealer as they still haven't sorted the intermittant problem with the handsfree kit after 4 services and 2 revisits it still intermittantly won't power up - i was told to live with it!

if i get the same noise again i will book it in for a service asap.

cheers

Make sure you get them to check the 'idler pulley' as the cam pulley is a different item.

Hope it works out for you

Kev, you're not a million miles away from RCM in Leic. or Zen in Wellingborough!

I'd take it to either of them i.e. specialists who know and care about their reputation, and therefore your car

Both of their hourly labour rates are exactly the same the last time I looked @ £47.50 + VAT... So, as from today that's 15% VAT! lol, therefore £54.63.

I get a similar noise in very cold weather, Ive had mine checked before , couldnt find any problems.
It seems once the oils warmed up the noise goes. I think it maybe the oil pump but not sure.
definatly best to get it checked though.

Thanks for all the replies

One or two of you have me a little worried now

i have had my Scoob from new and was hoping to keep it for quite a while longer - don't like the thought that the big ends may be on the way out after 38.5k pretty carefully driven miles with a full Subaru service history (always run on Vpower or Tesco 99 never thrashed when cold and always run off boost for the last mile or so home)

i was just considering carrying out a few more mods (sports cat, wallbro and a remap) but before i do sounds as if i need to get it checked properly by Cross Roads to check all is well just in case i need to call upon the warranty (which is 5 years or 100k on mine as it's a WRX Type UK )

hope i don't hear that sound again and it was just a one off?

is there anything else i can check?

will i have any problems as far as warranty is concerned as i have a TSL Group N backbox and deresonate centre plus a Simota panel filter??

Carstins seem to take a dim view at anything other than a PPP

i have heard Cross Roads are more mod friendly - or i guess if necessary i could put it back to standard before i send it in? - any thoughs

cheers

Kev

id put it back to standard.....and i only know mine has gone cos i went out and thrashed the crap out of it the it rattled i bit on start up next day and wen i did cold oil cheak there was non showing on the dipstick...........wat a dipstick i am now

mine is second hand and ive done 30k miles in mine and driven it hard ish 60 percent ofthe time and itsgot 105k on it now if you have looked after yours i cant see itbeing big ends only thing is oil pumps can get weak and relife spring can get sloppy so may be thats an idea cos first start up will take a coulpe of seconds toget round if oil pump is a bbit weak

a "clunking" sound comes from the front of my car when i reverse out of my parking space when its a cold morning and the wheel goes over the white line or wet leaves. (usual left wheel because of the way i drive out) i reverse in now and just drive straight out with no probs

i wish i had kids so i could send them out to clear the leaves

That's a totally different thing!
If you're close to full lock it's probably the natural play in the CV joint.

Update

It was -3c this morning and no nasty noises on startup - nothing - keeping my fingers crossed that it was an isolated incident

will still get the cam idler pulley check in 1300 miles by Cross Roads

cheers
