93-96 ecu can have a socket fitted some ecu's already have the socket ready , these ecu's are the four plug type you can the fit a scoobyecu / polar performance board to this socket , the 97 -98 ecu is a 3 plug ecu and a the moment nothing can be done with this ecu the later 99-onwards can be be re flashed/programed you can only use a a ecu that is the same type for year of car eg a 94 can go in a 93 ,94 ,95 ,96 but not into a 97 onwards as different 97 -98 cars at the moment have to have the ecu replaced eg apexi.
hope this helps

If you wish to retain the OEM ECU's std features, etc. i.e by NOT going the PFC, Simtek, etc. routes, then your only possible future option will be ESL Live for the v.3/4. It's a fully mappable daughterbaoard that goes into the existing OEM v.3/4 ECU.
The only problem is that it's not out yet!; ESL are still developing it. I read on here that it could be out early new year-ish - who knows?
See last paragraph of ESL's FAQ, here: Enduring Solutions Limited
Also read all the other FAQs for the lowdown on this great product.
Any questions, email them on: service@enduringsolutions.com
