Default 2006 2.5 STi CEL came on - help!

From what I can see when the CEL comes on it is EGT? I have had no hasstles for 15,000 with a cat back Magnex zorst, then today went to Manchester, filled up with Tesco 99RON for the first time ever and 70 miles later for the first time ever CEL came on but car was boosting fine - I think running rich because it was backfiring.
Please tell me what I should do. Peter

Anyone with a scanguage or similar can plug into your serial port and read the code, then do a search on here for the description.

If I reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery and pressing the brake pedal to ensure all power is drined, will this cancel the CEL or is it captured in a memory?

Thanks, Gents. This is all new to me - it has never happened before. The nearest place to me is the local Subaru dealer - is it worth asking them just to tell me what the code is?

You need to plug a reader to your car, the ECU will have stored the code for you. The reader will detect the code and will display it for you e.g. P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected)

Look up the code here...

Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Knowledge / OBDII Trouble Code Definitions

then decide what to do and where to go.
