Newage vs Classic? which is better?

Newage vs Classic? which is better?
ok ive never got into the newage imprezas and always stuck with classics.
but i quite like the version 8
how much heavier are hese newage imprezas?compared to the classic?
i remmeber a friend saying a standard sti version 5 beat a newage running 360bhp on the drag strip at crail?
was this really down to weight difference? or simply bad launch?
so standard vs standard which is better?
and then modded which is better? also money wise modded? are newages easier to tune?
Give us your thoughts

I believe the new age Sti is 1495 kilos, classic is 1235. So yes, a substantial increased. New ages much more refined, comfortable etc....in many respects related to ease of ownership, the game has moved on.
However, weight is the enemy of the performance car and in a like for like bhp copmparison the classic will always be quicker and more nimble.

I had had a newage WRX and the STi and now have a classic.
The weight and agility of the classic is the biggest factor and it is so much more raw and enjoyable to drive.
The newages are a safe bet and boring but if moddified can still be as much fun as the classic.
If the car is to be a daily drive then perhaps the newage will suit, otherwise if its a weekend or track day car then the classic will be better.imo

I agree that weight can be a killer, but it is not as simple as that and not as straight forward to compare.

I have had a Classic shape Scoob and in my opinion, the capabilities of the Newage chassis is much more than my old Classic. Modify a Classic to big bhp and a Newage to big bhp. Same type of output and you will realise how much better the Newage is, at coping with that. Classics chassis can be made better, but not without strengthening...... thus adding the weight.
Newage STI's have better engines and better transmission (i.e. stronger).
Newage STI's range from 1330kg's (Spec C/S202) up to the current shape STi of 1505kgs. The weight can / does make a difference.
IMO, both standard or modified, I would rather have a Newage Scoob...... but that is just me.

Not entirely true..... what the Newage gives away in weight, it gains in a better chassis out of the box.

If you go for a ra wrx or sti, the weight is even less. My RA feels superb with 330bhp, at a weight of around 1150kg. Power to weight of 286bhp/ton, a new age at 1495 stated above and 330bhp would only have 220bhp/ton. A big difference!

I drove both, and the classic feels archaic compared to the newage, but deffo felt faster, cheaper tax and insurance as well? I really wanted a bugeye, but wasn't worth the extra money to go slower!

Something into the mix.
I have watched some Time attack vids on You tube, I've yet to see a newage Impreza. All the tuners seem to choose the classic as the basis for a racer. Is this purely a coincidence? Or is it that the classic is the car?

Just thought I'd add my experiences.
I started off with a Bugeye WRX, boggo standard, modded it a bit, but soon started to get a bit bored. Really nice to drive, quite refined, comfortable etc. but a bit dull.
Swapped to a classic WRX, which has been modded, and it's a totally different animal. Harsh, noisy, horrid interior etc. etc. but the driving experience is totally addictive.
There's no answer to which is 'best', as they both suit different purposes. If you want raw, ***** out driving experience go for a classic. If you want more refinement, less noise but still a quick and capable drive, go newage.
All IMHO of course.

lol i think im just going to go for an sti ra version 6 .. by the sounds of it.. coz am always stripping something out of my car for weight loss...
done it in all the cars ive had.. just a habit.. mayaswell start off as light a possible.. besides i think the classics version 5/6 looks a lot better!
but the dam blob eye and hawkeye are growing on me..

Have to agree, the RA is an amazing piece of kit....but it can be a pain to live with at times. I have to drive with ear plugs in, if I don't then after about an hour of driving once I get out my ears are ringing and I'm deaf.
I have 2 lightweight seats, no trim and just short of 340 brake and on B roads it comes alive.

Depends what it is used for:
For a daily driver, I would take a newage/hawkeye every time for comfort, better interior, more compliant on the road etc.
Something for the weekend sir? Buy the classic!
I love my Type R and wouldn't change for any other Subaru.
Is it a coincidence that Zen, RCM all run classic 2 door shells??

not personally convinced the newage chassis is better, yeah its a little bit wider and yeah the shells a little bit stiffer, but come on, its the bloody same car underneath LOL
the whole thing with "newer cars handle better then older cars" is that they ALWAYS compare a new car with one that's a few years old, and the old one NEVER has had a full chassis refurb with new bushes,track rod ends, etc etc

Look's good mate, love the white ones. I'm debating removing the cage to save more weight. The exhaust touches the drive since fitting so it's added a few pounds.

I started with a Classic WRX but sold that to try out the newage so bought a Bugeye. A loverly car to drive far better than the classic but it just didnt do it for me, sold it after 6 months and bought another classic a WRX RA.
Im now on my 3rd classic an STI RA so you can see which side of the fence im on.

Have owned a blobeye scoob which run around 315bhp 310lb/ft and now have a classic STi version 6 with slight engine mods(full decat and filter), and to be honest you can feel those extra kilos on the newage as the classic feels more raw in a straight line and very powerful compared to my old newage.
The newage felt more solid and better built, and I find my old blobeye with coilovers handles much better then my classic with coilovers dont know what it is, but the newage felt more rigid and safe when I took corners at speed, where as the classic seems to go sidewards if i try to push it as much as I did with the newage!!!!
But the newage scoobs feel more comftable and great to use everyday, where as my classic feels like a rally car, which is what I really love about the classic, raw and exciting!!!!

a V3 type R that we run at well over 400 hp and a 310 hp blob with tien coilovers all Round
i perefer the blob cause the type R is a raw noisey car that you have to work at keeping on the road if you use too much right foot,
which dont get me wrong is fun but its a ball ache when its constant,
the blob handles good, its not a fat wallowing cow its a very drivable comfertable sports car ...its not fast enough realy (Found this out when i tried to lose an escort turbo) so its getting a 500hp plus engine build so it should be as quick as the type R
for a weekend/track car then i guess the classic is better as it will be easier and cheaper to rebody when you wreck it,
I certainly wouldnt want one as a daily driver again.
