Default 97 Impreza STI - check engine light....help!

Morning All,

Basically my MOT ran out a few weekends ago and have not been driving it for the last week. The MOT is today and last night I did the usual pre-MOT checks (lights, etc.) but when I started the car (first time for a week) the cel came on and stayed on.
What I don't understand is the car was fine last week (no cel on) and all I have done since is wash it!
Has this ever happened to anyone else?
Is there a check I can do at home to find out which fault code it could be? Or am I best off taking it to the nearest Subaru specialist for a diagnostic check?

Any help much appreciated.
Matt.

Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Scoobypedia / Scoobypedia under 'ECU' shows the way to manually check it and reset it.
The connectors may be taped up and can be a bugger to find.

You need to check the error code before anybody can guess the problem
