Rumbling Diff?

When on the overrun from above 60mph (off the gas slowing down for a dual carriageway roundabout for e.g.), there is a very noticeable rumbling type noise - which I am guessing is the rear diff?
Also noticeable when cruising at above 65.
Does this mean the diff needs replacing or can something be done to fix it?
If it needs replacing what sort of cost is involved - part cost and labour time?
Thanks.

Cheers - I'll check out the wheel bearings first then.
mjt, if I do need a diff how much would you want for it - I take it that even though yours is from a new age it still fits then?
