Default intercoolers

Hi guys need your advice, i want to change my top mount for a better one, but not sure what to go for. is there one from another subaru that is better? i have a `99 uk with 260bhp. also how do you distinguish between different injectors?
cheers

A top mount from a newage WRX or STi is the way to go. They require a little modification but work well.
Do a search and a few should come up.

Different injectors are usually distinguished by colour but its not always reliable.
Grey usually = 380cc
yellow = 440cc
mine are purple = 550cc
I think the most reliable method would be to check with the manufacturer of the injectors your interested in if they are aftermarket.

Hope this helps
Mike

I have a 99 RB5 and went the uprated intercooler route.

After doing alot of research I was given a link to a survey test that gave some suprising results for the 99-00 model.

From memory...... the classic STI/P1 intercoolers gave a very minimal improvement over standard.
An aftermarket reputable intercooler was worse than standard.
A newage WRX intercooler gave a noticeable imrovement and the newage STI one came out on top.

I opted for the newage WRX i/c and I got one local for £15 off Ebay.
Fitting was quite simple and quite alot larger than the classic i/c.

The reason I didn't go for the STI one was the cost and the scarey modding that is required.

You would have to make an adapter to use your V5/6 BOV, or if you want to use the V8 BOV, you will have to cut the mounting of the ignitioncoil a bit down, to allow the clearance of the bigger V8 BOV.

Your injectors 'should' be 440cc which should be good for around 340bhp

The 99> classics had "yellow" 440cc. If they are yellow they are likely to be the original ones.

If upgrading the intercooler on a classic the Hybrid FMIC is a bit of a no brainer. If you have a new age it's easier to go for an STi 8 TMIC

BUT

You have to budget for fitting and an induction kit and you will need a remap.

If you do a search for threads started by me, you'll find a very extensive post on the subject when I upgraded.

IMO the only difference between UK turbo and STi/P1 of 99/00 is its silver - otherwise no different.

Read this on several occasions.

i appreciate what Ciaran and NS04 are saying about changing it for a front mount, but i didnt really want to start cutting up the front bumper. also, we all know the standard MAF sensor doesnt really like cone filters . if i am wrong i will stand corrected but that is what i have always been told. FMIC lead to alot of lag aswell dont they? again will stand corrected if wrong.

Cheers for all your comments guys

The lag never bothered me one bit. The small amount there is can be driven around

Front bumper cutting not visiable from the outside

Not all cone filters cause problems with the Maf K&N57i safe bet

Significant increase in lag with front mount with appropirate mapping is an SN myth.
