Unhappy Steering Failure

Help

The steering on my '98 STI has gone from lumpy at tick over to intermittent complete power assist failure, when the steering is unassisted it doesn't self centre, is there any way I can establish if it's the power steering pump or the rack? Which is more likely? (I've already replaced the belt I hoped it was just the belt slipping). Has anyone got one or both tucked away in the garage?

thanks for any replies,

My P1 just had the same issues - new power steering pump fixed matters. It gradually worsened over about 20 miles and was progressievly worse the further away from straight ahead you got until it eventually failed completely and became completely unassisted. Heay work from then on!
